Who we are
UP Data Commons is a common research and development facility of the University of the Philippines. It is located at a Computational Science Research Center facility at the College of Science Library Building at the National Science Complex.
UP Data Commons is intended for research, teaching, and other officially sanctioned activities and may include extension works. Its current primary users are UP researchers, therefore, we require everyone who wishes to use these resources to register for an account and be bound by the Acceptable Use Policy for Information Technology Resources of the UP System. Since the system may allow or provide access and opportunities to copy information from remote sources, users must respect the rights of others, especially their privacy and intellectual property.
Rules and regulations are needed to ensure fair, safe and reliable access to these resources. These regulations aim to:
- ensure an operational and stable infrastructure that caters computing and data storage needs for research, teaching, and extension works;
- protect the integrity, reliability, availability, confidentiality, and efficiency of the UP Data Commons’ resources;
In general, UP Data Commons users must:
- Use the UP Data Commons only for its intended purpose, and refrain from misusing or abusing it;
- Maintain the integrity, reliability, availability, confidentiality and efficiency of computer-based information resources;
- Refrain from seeking to gain unauthorized access or exceed authorized access;
- Respect software copyright and licenses and other intellectual property rights;
- Respect the rights of other computer users; and
- Be aware that although it is the task of UP Data Commons personnels throughout the university to maintain the integrity and security of resources, security sometimes can be breached through actions beyond their control. Users are therefore urged to take appropriate precautions such as safeguarding their account and password, taking full advantage of file security mechanisms, backing up critical data, and immediately reporting any policy violations or abuse.
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any data that you use on UP Data Commons resources that are not accessible to the general public. It may include data, such as:
- Intellectual property, such as report drafts or research in progress,
- Proprietary data, such as data owned by a specific institution, or licensed applications.
- Regulated data, such as medical, personal identifying information, or student records.
Please note that certain websites may be subject to different laws, which impose regulations on the information stored on their websites. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with their own policies and regulations for the usage of their data.
Access to a system does not grant you full authorization for all activity. Users may only use the UP Data Commons for its authorized purposes, which is to support the research, education, clinical, administrative and other functions of the University of the Philippines.
The following activities are considered unacceptable and will be subject to sanctions and/or penalties according the to Acceptable Use Policy of the UP System:
- using or attempting to use computing resources without a valid allocation and user account;
- usage for purposes other than those mentioned in the accepted allocation proposal;
- obstructing or tampering the operation of the facilities;
- reading, changing, distributing, or copying others’ data or software without their permission;
- activities in violation of local or university and national laws;
